Donkey Sanctuary in Aruba

Donkey Sanctuary Aruba history

For centuries, donkeys were the literal driving force of Aruba’s local economy. Introduced by Spanish settlers in the 1500s, these hardy animals served as the primary mode of transportation, hauling heavy loads of continuous cargo, clearing agricultural fields, and working the grueling terrain of the gold rush era. However, the arrival of automobiles in the mid-20th century rapidly changed their status from essential workers to a displaced population. By the 1970s, a devastating outbreak of disease coupled with urban development left the island’s wild donkey population dangerously near extinction. To save these gentle creatures from traffic accidents and starvation, the non-profit Donkey Sanctuary Aruba was founded in 1997. Originally operating from a modest patch of land in Santa Lucia, the volunteer-run organization grew significantly, eventually relocating to its current, expansive habitat in Bringamosa (Santa Cruz) to provide a permanent, safe haven for over 130 rescued donkeys.
