Reaching Boca Grandi is a straightforward and incredibly scenic drive from Aruba’s main tourist hubs. If you are staying in the high rise hotel zones of Palm Beach or Eagle Beach, jump on Route 1 and head southeast, driving straight through Oranjestad and past Queen Beatrix International Airport. Keep following Route 1 all the way down into San Nicolas (Aruba’s cultural capital), then follow the local signs pointing toward Seroe Colorado.
Driving Time from Palm/Eagle Beach: Approximately 35 to 40 minutes.
Driving Time from Oranjestad/Cruise Port: Around 30 minutes.
Parking: Free, open parking is available right along the dirt tracks next to the sand dunes.
Boca Grandi is legendary within the international kiteboarding community. While casual tourists stick to the calm waters of Eagle Beach or Palm Beach on the western coast, experienced kite surfers head south.
The Wind: Thanks to Aruba’s relentless, steady trade winds, which average 20 to 30 knots almost year round Boca Grandi offers a continuous supply of power.
The Set Up: The wind blows onshore to side onshore, meaning if anything goes wrong on the water, the wind will safely push you back toward the sandy beach rather than out to sea.
The Water: The bay features a mix of choppy water and rolling waves ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters, perfect for intermediate to advanced riders looking for big air or wave riding.
No. Swimming at Boca Grandi is strongly discouraged
While the water looks incredibly inviting from the rolling white sand dunes, the undercurrents here are fierce and highly unpredictable. There are no lifeguards on duty, and getting caught in a rip current on this side of the island is exceptionally dangerous. Save the swimming for nearby Baby Beach, which is just a 5-minute drive down the road.
