The National Park Quick Facts
Looking for an adventure that takes you beyond the beautiful beaches of Aruba? Look no further than Arikok National Park, which is one of the best places to visit in Aruba, a breathtaking natural preserve that covers almost 20% of the island!
Arikok National Park offers a stark and stunning contrast to Aruba’s resort-lined coast. Think dramatic coastlines carved by the relentless sea, towering cacti reaching for the bright Aruban sun, and fascinating geological formations waiting to be discovered. This isn’t just a sightseeing trip; it’s an immersive experience into Aruba’s unique natural heritage.
Located along the remote windward coast is the Natural Pool, locally known as the Conchi. It is a serene depression carved into the islands rugged limestone and volcanic rock. While the Caribbean sea violently crashes against the outer rock walls, the inner pool remains calm, creating a stunning natural swimming hole. Because the terrain leading to Conchi is incredibly rocky and unpaved, accessing it requires a 4×4 Jeep or a guided tour.
Arikok is home to several ancient limestone caves that offer a glimpse into the island’s pre-colonial history. Fontein Cave is famous for the authentic, brownish red pictographs left behind by the indigenous Arawak people on the limestone ceilings. Park rangers are frequently stationed near the entrance to provide free, impromptu history lessons about drawings. Just a short drive away, Quadirikiri Cave is famous for its dramatic lighting, with sunlight piercing through holes in the cave roof to illuminate the chambers below.
While guided excursions are fantastic for kicking back and letting someone else navigate, exploring Arikok National Park on your own is entirely possible and highly rewarding. If your goal is to reach the Natural Pool, you must rent a 4×4 Jeep. Standard cars will not make it over the steep, jagged rock paths, and rental companies will void your insurance if you take a standard car off-road. Drive slowly, follow the designated paths to protect the local flora, and expect a bumpy ride.
San Fuego Entrance (The main Hub): Located in Santa Cruz, this is the primary entrance. If you are heading to the Natural Pool, start here. This entrance features the main Visitor Center where you can purchase your day passes, pick up physical maps, and speak with park rangers about daily trail conditions.
Vader Piet Entrance (The Eastern Gate) Located on the southern coast near the island’s towering wind turbines. Use this entrance if you are skipping the Natural Pool and want immediate access to the Fontein and Quadirikiri Caves, or the sand dunes at Boca Prins.
